7 Mistakes to Avoid When Designing a Logo

A business’ logo is perhaps one of the most important aspect of its brand as it displays the personality of the business and also conveys what the organization does. Designing a logo is pretty tough and a significant number of companies get the wrong ideas when developing or redesigning their logo. 1. Avoid plagiarism or copying other people’s logo

First in the list is plagiarism since it is a very common and crucial mistake that may create unprecedented problems for your client. Using other peoples design is not cool and is likely to result in trademark and copyright infringement. Aping logos from successful companies shows you have little creativity and might impact your credibility as a designer. 

2. Following trends and fads

There is always a trending style in design whether this is in fashion, web or graphic design. The minimalistic approach to design, for example, is one of the recent trends and many designers have jumped on this bandwagon.  A logo may seem eccentric at first, but what happens when the fad goes away?

3. Wrong colors

Logos can be vibrant as one of their main functions is to catch the eye of potential clients and to form a memorable image in their minds. However, many designers rely on colors to bring out the effects in the logo. Using color to distinguish important aspects of the design results in a loss of meaning when the logo adopts one tone. 

4. Using stock pictures

A mistake often made by amateurs or business owners who decide to make their own logos and are not well-versed with copyright laws. While downloading stock images may not be a crime, it can result in legal recourse if it is used in a logo. 

5. Too many fonts

The font choice that you choose is likely to contribute or impede the success of the logo design and in most cases poor font choices leads to poor logo design. The secret is to find the logo which is compatible with the images in the logo. Furthermore, a maximum of two logos is always recommended to create a professional logo. 

6. Creating logos for your portfolio and not your client

Designers sometimes create a selfishly designed logo for themselves and not for the success of their client. It is critical to understand that the client did not hire you to design the logo for yourself but they require the use of your honest advice and skills to develop the best logo design for their business.

7. Using bitmaps or raster images

Professional designers always use vector graphics software when designing logos since they are made up of mathematically precise points. Using such a software ensures there is visual consistency when the logo is scaled or magnified. Raster images, on the other hand, consists of pixels and is likely to cause problems during reproduction.

Designing the perfect logo will require you to avoid some of these rookie mistakes. While some mistakes like a poor choice of font will create poorly designed logos, other mistakes such as plagiarism can cause copyright tussles.
