There is no doubt that search engine optimization is an integral part of any website. Therefore, any website designers worth their salt must understand the way search engine optimization works. Here are just ten of the SEO rules for designers.

1. Do not cheat

The number one rule is that you should not cheat. There is no way that you can fool Google no matter how hard you try. You should strive to create quality content. In doing so, your site will rank highly on search engines.

2. Use your key words

You need to look for keywords that are relevant to your site. The keywords must also occur naturally in your content. You can use your keywords in sentences and headings but the keywords need to be used sparingly. Always avoid stuffing keywords.

3. Content is king

Rule number three is about the content. Users usually search for the content and not design. In case you do not provide the content they need, they will no longer visit the site. Make sure that you give your users what they want.

4. Use a clean code

The fourth rule is to use a clean code. Make sure that you use a code that is readable. Make use of descriptive tags whenever you can. You should follow the concept structure when writing code for your site.

5. Use a homepage

The homepage is important since it helps search engines to find your site. It should also give a summary of your entire site. The homepage will offer your users a reason to look at other content in your site.

6. Use links

Search engines use the links on your site. You should not use the “click here” links. The link should direct the user to where he will get more and relevant information on something.

7. Title tags

The title tag should appear in each of the website’s pages. They should also be accompanied by a description of about 60 words. Using title tags ensures that the page title appears in search results. It will give readers more reason to continue to your site. The navigation links should match the title on your pages. The title tag may appear to be small, but it is important in search engine optimization.

8. Alt tags

Apart from the title tags. You should also consider using the alt tags since you need to have images that are relevant to the page. Alt tags gives more information about pictures and also helps improve the findability of your website. However, you should remember to use the correct labels for your images.

9. Do not use Meta tags

Meta tags were previously popular and regarded as very important. However, they are no longer necessary, and you should ignore them completely. You can, alternatively, use description tags. The description tag should tell users why they should go to your site when searching for the right information. Search engines will use the description tags to show the links to your site.

10. Site map

Ensure that you have a site map on your website. The site map will describe the structure on your page. You should develop a perfect site map and give it to Google.
